Why can't you unknow things?

Question

the human mind seems kinda like the us constitution, more things are added, but nothing is ever taken out. why aren't we free to revise what we know and start over completely anew?

I've always wondered this. If humankind has the ability to send a man to the moon, wouldn't you think a scientist could create something to erase unwanted memories from out minds. It would be really beneficial to lots of people who've seen terrible things or gone through terrible things that they want to forget. i.e. Soldiers, Rape / Mulestation victims, People who've witnessed a gruesome murder or death. I'm sure with all the advances in science today SOMEONE could create something. Oh well, I guess we'll have to wait and see.
