  1. It's optical disturbance caused by a rush of blood and oxygen to the brain or not enough oxygen to the brain, it's usually temporary although sometimes people with migraines can suffer this for long periods of time. If it continues for a length of time you should see a doctor.

  2. you are hallucinating

  3. I'm not a doctor, but those symptoms can have various causes.  One would really need to at least consult with his or her family doctor (and/or opthalmologist/eye dr) to help rule things out.  A person with ocular (pertaining to eyes) migraines may experience an aura (seeing flashing lights, stars or such) before a headache comes on (or perhaps not get a headache at all).  I get ocular migraines (diagnosed by opthalmologist and seizure disorder and such ruled out) and if get an aura, usually see lights or colors out of the peripheral (side) vision as you seem to describe.  The person may get an aura before (not to cause a panic) having a seizure.  A detached retina (retina is at back of eye that takes in light) can also cause flashing lights or such.  One of the more severe causes would be (not to cause another panic ;) a brain tumor.  I only mentioned that as it's extremely important to make an appointment with one's doctor right away.  If feeling light-headed or such, please go to the ER.

  4. Are you sure you're eating properly? Sometimes I feel like that when I havent eaten a meal in a while, i see stars, and i just need to make sure im eating enough of the right foods, fruits and veg etc...

  5. Have you ever heard that artists and musicians can see colors? Many do. They see waves of colors and weird formations. It's all part of their extraordinary imaginations. Also people with Bi Polor disorder see things like this as well. It could just be your field of vision too. Some people with certain eye disorders like Astigmatism have distorted vision.
