Ever since iwas a kid I've never been able to sleep @ "strange" or diffrent places. Like friends houses for sleepovers ( when I was a kid) or camp, or even church 'lock ins' I just stay awake. Right now my hubby & I are visiting his friends and I can not sleep. But - if we were in a hotel I could sleep just fine. Why do I have this prob?

  1. well i read somewhere that sometimes if you cant sleep because you are not comfortable with the enviroment to turn down the heat and make the room cooler or turn up the AC.

  2. unfamiliar place will cause u not to sleep

  3. I can't sleep in a camp or in a church either...bearly in a hotel.

  4. It's really common to be that way. Most people are at least somewhat sensitive to the noises around them while they're trying to sleep, and those 'background noises' are usually different from place to place. It's often hard to get used to sleeping in places where the noises are much different than what your brain is used to 'tuning out', so to speak.

Hotels of course typically design their rooms to be as quiet and neutral as possible, so you will most likely get a good night's sleep no matter who you are. Of course, you also probably have some anxiety about being in a different place without even realizing it, and that can affect you too - among other things like temperature.

  5. Strangely I am the same way. I can't exactly explain why this happens, but i know it has to deal with you being comfortable in order to get to sleep. I know when i sleep at someones house, just the feeling of not being in my room keeps me up. It is a strange, new place with different surroundings. Everytime i sleep somewhere else, sleep medecine is a necessity so i don't care about my surroundings or whats on my mind.

  6. Its a psychological thing. I expect you cant relax because you are not in your own "zone". In a hotel, even though its a different bed its a space that's just for you and your husband for that night.

Lots of people have this problem, including myself. Perhaps you could buy some over the counter antihistamine-based sleeping tablets whenever you are going to be sleeping away, to help you feel drowsy and switch off.
