Why can certain people be "proud" of their race, and others cannot?

I see this hypocrisy everywhere in the United States. Certain races like African Americans have the right to say Black Power, and raise the fist, and they have Black History Month where they discuss all the pride and accomplishments of the Black man, but where are the Asian, Caucasian, Hispanic, history months? If there was a White history month, or if a white man said White Power, it would be considered racist. Why do African Americans get preferential treatment? Thanks.

And the smart blacks and "minorities" are proud of themselves all the time.

Anyone who has pride in their race, nationality, ethnicity, or anything else that happened by accident is plain stupid, to say the least. I don't think that any of these race, ethnic, etc...months should be recognized. How is being of a certain race or nationality an accomplishment. It's nothing more than a mere biological accident. You didn't do anything to be black or white so why does someone feel like it's an accomplishment or worthy of pride?

I agree with you, these race months are dumb and I do not care if anyone says I'm a racist for noting that.

My opinion (as a black person) is that Black History Month ect. probably came from people wanting to help black people during segregation. Through these different ways of aknowledging black people, it's helped people to aknowledge us as a racial group that is equal to the rest of the world. If someone were to say something like "White Power" to me, my first reflex would be annoyance because, honestly, segregation wasn't a very long time ago, and coming from a racist person saying White Power would be a bad thing. But coming from someone who is not racist and is using such a phrase out of pure innocence and pride, it's a good thing. So it's a tough thing to think about...but I wouldn't suggest running around screaming "White Power" just in case someone were to misenterpret it. It's important to understand that black people have struggled a unique struggle, and we really NEED things like the raised fist, because without it, we might not be where we are today. So, in short, the reason why "White Power" is considdered racist by some is because it is such a delecate subject. Saying "White Power" is not actually racist, but it can (and probably will) be perceived that way.

P.S. I think there is a Hispanic history month...I'm not sure.

why would you want to be proud about your race anyways?  I mean I love my people but I'm not going to treat them any differently then any one else because that's like vanity.  I think a lot of the black pride movement is based on educating people what they have had to deal with in this country.

we definetly do not get preferential treatment so that comment is absolutely invalid. also there is a hispanic heritage month, and the reason that blacks today feel the need to celebrate things like black history month is because we are under recognized in all aspects...i mean how much did u learn about black inventors, poets, and historians etc. in ur history class. As far as a white history month u get it every day everything we learn in history is from a white point of view and the accomplishments of whites seem like such a norm that u dont even recognize how much it is taught and spread. I don;t think u are racist but it is very hard for most whites to step outside of their skin and see things from the pov of blacks...also in response to the first answer eevents like Miss Black America have been created because it is apparent that the standard of beauty is different fr the two races and unfortunately no matter how beautiful a black woman is white judges wil 9 times out of 10 choose a white woman because thats wat they feel America is "comfortable" seeing...its saddening to see comments like these because i thought we had progressed alot more but i guess some peoples mindset cant keep up with the times

Actually there is a Hispanic Heritage month, I believe its in September. America was built on hypocrisy. Just think, when the Constitution was written it declared all men were created equal. The founding fathers wrote this as slavery went on, so you couldn't get more hypocritical than that.

There's bad connotation with. Racists have used the "white power" phrase so there's a bad connotation with it. The minorities have always been oppressed....so being able to declare--well for me "Asian power" means so much more because we finally can celebrate our obtained freedom and rights.

i know what you mean i am chinese myself but i think because black and white ppl are taller and stronger and more sucessful in the world like bill gates but now a days chinese are not bad like yao ming and there are lots of rich chinese ppl. This year their hosting the beijing olympics i think in 10 years china will replace usa in politics and other stuff

It's called the power of words. If you're white and you want to be proud of it, go ahead. it's just the connotation from a lot of whites' ancestors attached to the words. So that's why when they say "WHITE POWER", people remember what it's always meant for a long time, even if it doesn't now, and rightly say "RACIST". Some black power extremists are just as racist. The thing is, we're all hypocrites like that. Who cares if they have a month? Why don't you organize a month where you celebrate accomplishments of whites, such as the Declaration of Independence? It's the US, you CAN do that.

Haven't you ever seen whites gather ALL OVER THE US with confederate flags, or to celebrate their "culture"? If you haven't then don't ask these kinds of questions, because you need to look around more. THERE are white holidays like that, they're just not national. but they can be celebrated as such if enough people in an area want it to be.

PS: THey don't really get any. They still don't get enough. I'm not black, nor do I hang out with that many. I'm not really racist. Everyone's been enslaved, everyone's been slaughtered, insulted, all over the world. Greeks used to have white slaves. So did some Africans. Whites in the US had black slaves. It doesn't matter, for gods' sakes. Just do what you wanna do. Leave it be. Some people will think like that, but not all "blacks" think they deserve all that, or get good treatment, just as not all whites are RICH.

In places where white people are the minority, you can say "white power." You won't find those places in the US, though.

ok i am sick and tired of ppl complaining about black history month. First of all african americans went through alot First they were taken from their home land, the women were raped and beat babies were killed and stolen from their mothers, and duh slavery. African americans have pulled through and over came alot of things so dont u dare complain about black history month. And yes i have respect for all other races and i kno they have been through as much as Blacks have and White ppl seem to have a HUGE problem with it and as much as they say they are not rascsist i do not believe it.tThink about it white ppl have and own almost eveything in America corporations , buisnessese etc., etc. White ppl dont even give credit to blacks or other races for their acheivements and Knowledge they just want all eyes on them. h**l why do you think there are so many job less blacks?? I agree with you. Personally i think things like the Miss Black America are as racist as anything. Any time a race is pointed out for good or bad it is racist.  The problem will never go away until all people black ,white, brown etc stop pointing out the difference. We are all human and thats the only thing we are.  The most of the problem comes from the government. They try to make up for past racism by inventing affirmative action and think they are doing good but all they are doing is keeping the races apart. Now that whites are a minority giving them the benefit of affirmative action would still be considered racist. We need to do away with all forms of racism good and bad and move on to a future where we are just human

black power is actually a part of history, i watched a martin luther king video and one guy did it in a march (i think) and raised his fist and then others just did it.

but if you said white power and raised your fist, it would seem like you're mocking black power
