I'm not being facetious (yet) but I just want to know why they can't do office work?

  1. You have a valid point. I think though its all to do with what you get free with disability benefits, like help with housing, free dental treatment, free spectacles/prescriptions so on and so forth.

But having said that though not all disabled people are that shallow and some do actually work instead of sitting around doing nothing.

Before anyone goes off on one I'm disabled and I work.

  2. I wish I could go back to work, it's impossible because of the mass I still have on my lung, had lung cancer, the mass will always be there, I can't lift anymore, I did housekeeping, and worked in the restaurant/food services industry. Believe me being on SSDI which I paid into all my working life doesn't begin to pay my bills. I can pay my rent and have 50.00 for the rest of my bills, it doesn't cover food or other necessities. I don't get food stamps either. I'm not on the internet all day though, I still have to take care of my house.

  3. why cant people live their own lives stop sticking their noses in other peoples lives

  4. When your company decides to sack you in favour of someone cheaper in India it is called outsourcing. Have you actually seen who the people are that get to do your job? It might be that disabled  guy on the internet all day.

  5. They can. But a lot of employers will not take a chance in hiring someone who does not have experience, or are disabled because they believe that disabled people come with a lot of baggage.

Plus office work still involves a lot of skill. Someone who can play on the internet is not automatically going to be good at, say, typing, or general administration

  6. Because their benefits will stop.

I used to work in an office where a totally blind man worked and a paraplegic worked - full time.

I work in an office and have never had to lift a heavy box in my life - for the person who suggested that this was a good enough reason not to work!

  7. Lots of people can do lots of stuff.  Employers want people to something for next to nothing as that enhances profit.   It is easier for employers to hire those who are not handicapped and pay them less.

It is not that handicapped can't do it, it is that the jobs are being bid down because we are in an age of automation where more and more income worthiness is being suppressed because there is actually less to do that there is funds to pay to do it!

It costs a handicapped person more to go to work than it does a non handicapped person!

So this competition is forcing a "Survival of the Fittest" to do the work!  And those that will accept the least wages and cause the least problems for the employers get the jobs.

But if employers were forced to hire the handicapped first, what would this world be like?  lol

Course if you come from a family that is rich enough to help you get a job in their family business or close friends etc, that have built special bonds of trust, you're in!

  8. They could, but nobody wants to hire them.

  9. I may be one of the disabled people your talking about! Now I have a ? for you! I am 53 yrs. old and have COPD. Ive been a welder all of my adult life and have no other skills or training. Exactly who is going to hire me. If for a moment you think age discrimination doesn't exist your very wrong

  10. Because  they're  busy  on  the  internet !!!

  11. i guess it depends how disabled they are. In my office, we have 2 disabled people working their lives off for their pay...they earn their money. One is a polio victim who legs are all twisted, bless her...shes just 24...with a smile like an angel & a brain sharp as a knife. Shes a qualified Chartered Accountant & her department is helpless without her. The other has some kind of a back problem...she wears a brace...but is equally efficient in her work. i view both as excellent role models for all of us. i mean how can anyone shirk work when we see them strive to do stuff that we take for granted??

  12. Issues relating to access and opportunity spring to mind.

I'd be interested to know why many of the non-disabled people who spend all day on the internet are not out doing a job of some description!

  13. That is the beauty of being an American and it also explains why this nation is getting poorer and poorer.

  14. Unfortunatley folk with disabilities of any sorts are discriminated against more often than not. Them getting employment is a big achievement and not so easily done.

  15. yeap i agree with james, and theres always the problem of access into the place of work too and then the employers can be worried about health issues i;e sickness:time off. But i do think that disabled people should be encouraged to work and everything put in place so that if they wanted to work then they could.

  16. Because sitting at your computer for a couple of hours spread over a day is not the same as doing an office job.  If they were capable of doing this, they have many problems in getting a job.  Not only are many employers biased against anyone with a handicap, a wheelchair user would find it very difficult to get to work in most of our cities.  The underground is not wheelchair friendly and neither are busses in many areas.  Running a car is expensive and parking would be a problem.  Many offices have stairs and no lifts.  One big problem would be lack of disabled toilets - can you go up to 10 hours every day without a pee?  I couldn't do half that!

Also, for many disabled people - and not just those in wheelchairs, they do not have the strength or stamina to do a full time job plus the travel.  For some it is all they can do to get round the shops or even through the day at home.  Maybe you should talk to some disabled people about this - or spend a day or two in a wheelchair yourself!

  17. They can but maybe they don't want to.... Office work isn't just about been on the internet...and I wouldn't think they'd spend all day on the internet.

  18. who said they do not work?

  19. Because office work does not just entail sitting at a desk on the internet all day.  It can involve a lot of lifting of boxes, folders etc which they might not be able to manage.

I have a friend who would love to be able to work but is unable to due to a back problem.  People like her suffer due to people making false claims and I know she is sick of being tarred with the same brush as them.  When she was able to she work 12 hour days and held down two jobs.

Retox - I constantly have to lift boxes of files when doing archieve filing in all of the office jobs I have had.  Some people might find this a problem due to injury or disability, I find it hard and I am fully able, I am not using this as excuse for people not to work, I am just stating that not all office work involves sitting at desk on a computer

  20. but their disabled and if they work, that would be in violation of their disability checks
