this is the best site i know for goldfish.. though.. around 3 goldfish would be good for a 20 gallon.. for quite some time

  2. If you keep a fancy goldfish in good conditions it should grow to at least 6 inches long, and get really fat. Two of them will crowd a 20gal tank.

It's not the size of the fish when you buy them (1 or 2"), it's the size they should grow to.

It would be OK to put 6 small goldfish in a 20gal, for a while, as long as you have a plan to re-house some of them later as they grow.

  3. These are just some of the links that will tell you what size of tank that you need for 4 goldfish. There are many more, just type these words "goldfish tank sizing" and you'll see many pages of experts advice.

  4. Frankly, people with 6 or 7 golds in a 20 gallon are going to have 6 or 7 diseased, deformed and dead fish within 6 or 7 weeks.

Save yourself a headache and heed the 10g/fish rule.

The answer to the 1 fish : 10 gallon ratio is simple: dilution is the solution to pollution.

Goldfish, because they do not have 'stomachs' per se (their GI tract extends all the way to the vent) excrete a lot more pollution than other kinds of fish. Giving them a large amount of water per fish means that YOU will not have to work as hard changing water to keep your water parameters at acceptable levels.

With two goldfish in a 20g, you will probably be looking at 2 50% water changes per week to keep your nitrates down to below 20ppm. With 6 fish in a 20g, IF you manage to cycle your tank in the first place without casualties, you're looking at 80% daily to keep nitrates in check. Not so fun. Tanks are supposed to be relaxing, not a dreaded chore.

I'm glad you're researching before buying. And you will soon find out: a tank with two well-cared fish who love you and begin to show you their personalities will soon seem much fuller than a tank full of skittish, diseased fish who don't even have space to turn.

  5. For goldfish, you need a lot of space.. If you don't have enough room, they can start to get really stressed, and I'm sure you don't want that to happen.. You need at least 2 gallons of water per inch of each goldfish, and goldfish can grow to be over a foot long.. Those people that you have seen probably have smaller goldfish than you or their fish are stressed.. I don't know about them but don't overstock your tank..

  6. Goldfish get over a foot long.  Go take a ruler and swim it around in your tank.  It's obvious.  People that have alot stunt the fish and inflict uneeded torture on them

  7. The rule is usually about one inch of fish per gallon. If the fish are smaller than you can have more but if they are too big then you cant have as many

  8. goldfish produce lots of ammonia. and ammonia is toxic to fish.

They get huge! Fancy are a minimum of 6 inches. Common are a minimum of 12+. Of course, many are stunted when put into those types of conditions which will shorten their lifespan which is HORRIBLE.

I wouldnt suggest putting more than 2 in there. Even if other people do it, it doesnt mean their smart and know about goldfish ;]
