  1. There are companies who have programs that search the web for e-mail addresses.  When they find one, they send all kinds of junk e-mail (i.e. spam).  If your e-mail address appears on a web page, you will get all kinds of junk from these "spambots", so most web sites protect (hide) your e-mail address.
