Question:

Why can only one user on this computer connect to the Internet...

There are three user accounts on this computer. Until the other day, we could all connect to the Internet no problem. However as of yesterday, when I try and connect from my part of the computer I get a message saying "Error 169: Access was denied because the username and/or password was invalid on the domain"

I've gone through every single Internet setting on my part of the computer and checked it against the settings on the user that can still connect and they are all identical - the passwords are the same and everything so I just don't understand why I can't get online anymore.

Anyone have any ideas about how I can fix this?

  1. I think you might have the error number wrong. Are you sure it's not 691 ?

    Have a read of this:

    http://www.tiscali.co.uk/help/broadband/...

It quotes Tiscali but it sounds like the error could occur with any provider. Sounds like your login details are wrong - they may have been overwritten.

You may have to reinstall your provider software or contact them.

If it really is error 169, please ignore this answer.

    Good luck!

  2. Do you have a dial-up connection or broadband?

    try the following:

Start > connect to > click your connection. > properties >options tab. > untick the 'Include Windows logon domain' check box (if it is ticked)

Start > connect to > click your connection. >  > connect dialog box (check your username and password are correct) > properties > security tab. > under security options, in the Validate my identity as follows box click 'Allow unsecured password' and then click OK.

Make sure none of the users have a setting to use a proxy server as this can block other users: right click internet explorer icon > properties > tools > internet options > connections tab > under dial-up & VPN click settings > make sure 'use a proxy server for this connection' is not ticked. > do the same for the lan setting in the connections tab

sometimes windows updates apply patches that alter settings.

  3. if you have tried powering down and rebooting all to no avail.. then you got to make certain that the general settings of the PC have not been changed.

If this comes up negative you could try changing your password.. it is tricky I know because I've had the same happen to me.  & yes I had to change my password to gain access ...
