Why can the body handle 4700mg of potassium but the amount in most supplements is 99mg?

  1. because potassium is water soluble, and can be passed through the body as waste.  Whatever it doesn't need, it discards.  

    99mg is likely an FDA RDA (recommended daily allowance) for a supplement in the form you are taking.  You wouldn't want to ingest 4700mg of potassium on a regular basis or you'd likely s***w up kidneys and liver.
