Why can we say that reading is one of the "purest" pleasures known to man?

Reading was one of the greatest pleasures I ever discovered, and it continues to be my greatest source of knowledge, pleasure and understanding of the world around me.  In that sense, it is "pure" because it requires nothing more than my reading skills to embrace its pleasures.
