I went onto farmers insurance because that is what my parents have. I'm 15 but I'm turning 16 next year and have heard some real horror stories about car insurance for teenagers. I just wanted to check how much it costs but farmers says i cant get a quote because thats only available for people 18-108. WHY!? Are there any other insurance companies out there that I CAN get a quote for or are there at least any other ways that I can find out how much it will cost?

  1. You are a minor DUH

  2. Well, you can't get a quote because you're 15.

Yes, there are companies that will write a policy for a 16 year old - Progressive comes immediately to mind.  Go to www.progressive.com for the quote.

Keep in mind, if the car has a loan on it, you need to carry liability, collision, and comprehensive - and the collision on a 16 year old driver is usually higher than the other two together.

Most agents that you call won't do this, because you aren't interested in buying - you want them to do the work, and they know they aren't going to get paid.  Plus, only a high risk company like progressive will write a 16 year old.  Lastly, you're probably going to do a quote with a super fast, brand new car . ..  to find out that yes, it really WILL cost you $35,000 a year if you want a 2008 Porsche.

  3. You can get one. It's just that a lot of companies will  not want your business due to the high risk exposure. farmers, state farm Geico,, None of those big name brand carriers will quote you a price for a standalone policy. You just don't qualify for those companies programs.

Farmers will give your parents a quote if they call and ask about adding you to their policy. But they won't just give a quote to you as a minor.

Other companies will give you a quote. You'll have better luck if you telephone a local independent agency. If you have a place like Insurance depot in your town you can get a quote there.

Also since your a minor you'll have to have your parents authorize and cosign any application for insurance. At your age though the cheapest way to get insurance is to be on your parents policy.

I just ran a quote for a 16 year old new driver on my quote software assuming a 1998 ford Taurus and a clean record and no driver discounts. 9 companies offered a quote. The cheapest for "liability only" was 189 per month, Same thing for a 1998 ford mustang base model was 199.48 per month. It's kinda high for new drivers. Defensive driver training and a good student discount brought the mustang down to 165 per month. Full coverage would be a lot higher. Depending where you live, especially if not in a major city, rates can be cheaper.

Just check around your area. You'll find much better deals on the phone or through your parents.

( "-" ) See, you just received your first quote..

    Good Luck
