For the same reason you cant work whe your 8yrs old. Be a kid....you have your whole life to work.

You can get a job if you really want one.  What restaurant is nearby.  Go to them and say you will be a "bus boy".  (bus boys even get tips)

Ask your neighbors if they need you to:

1. mow their lawn

2. walk their dog

3. any odd job?  maybe they need you to carry stuff, move stuff, help clean out the garage.

4. wash windows...practice at home first... they will want them spotless, so ask your mom to show you the right way... get lots of rags and paper towels.  many people need their windows washed and would love to support an ambitious, local kid (who knows what he is doing)  You can ask for $10 an hour.

5.  Make a flyer, deliver it to your neighbors... be sure your mom and dad see it and approve... " local kid wants to help you "

                                        mow your lawn, dog sit and dog walk

                                         wash windows, help clean out the garage

                                          lift and carry stuff, vacuum

Use a fun graphic from your computer, spell all words correctly

Just be sure you know the neighbors.  Talk to your mom and dad to let them know what you are doing.  

The other place you might check are the locally owned grocery store, hardware, auto mechanic... tell them you want to work.

Mainly because of the insurance that businesses have to carry. Another part is because of the maturity of most 14 year olds. And because of the labor laws. There are places who are allowed to hire someone under 16, but there are guidelines they have to follow.

Check out the labor laws in your state (mine is www.in.gov) and find out exactly what you can and can't do. Search for labor laws on the site. It's pretty long, but it's worth knowing about.
