I have been trying for over a year, to connect my Canon DV video Camera to my PC for video capture and editing.

I even built a new PC thats more poweful and faster than my previous one in beleive that it would help. But it has not. I have a firewire connection on the back and front of my PC Case. I just only three days ago purchased a new Firewire card. I have used the Canon camera disc that came with the camera and installed everything (even stuff i didnt want) to my PC.

Everytihng is fine. But when i try to capture or even play video in any way its not having it. But i can see my pictures that ive taken on the camera.

The hard drive is 500 gig. The processor is a duo core Athlon. Ive checked BIOS and the 1394 connection is enabled. I can also see firewire in 'Device Manager' all is fine there. There is no prob with my PC.

So does anybody have any other suggestions as to whats wrong? Or should i pay for PC shop to sort it out?

thanks for reading!

  1. Did the firewire card come with some software, install it if it did, also Vista has problems with firewire cards.

  2. I would try removing the software that you installed off the disk and reinstalling it. This has worked for me in the past. Other than that I would think your PC hasn't got a certain software package that is needed for the particular type of video that the Canon uses. I know some types of video dont work on Macs so it could be the same the other way around.

    Good luck!

  3. Well, seeing as youve done very extensieve checks with you hardware i seriosuly doubt there is a problem with that. Therefore the probelm must lie with the software. You need some form of software to capture video from the camera (should be included on the cannon camera disc) and a device driver for the camera that needs to be installed on your computer (this should be on the disc as well).

I think for anyone to help you, your going to need to put more detailt about the software end of the problem. But heres a few pointers anyway

1.Install the driver and capture software from the disc to your PC.

2.Open the capture software, and connect your camera the software should then detect the camera and you should be able to start capturing.

Sorry i couldnt be of much help.
