i had loaded windows xp pro with sp1 and 2. i no longer have that disk availible. i do have another windows xp pro, but when i try to load it i get a window that says the version of windows you are trying to load is older than the version currently being used.. It will not boot from disk either, yet the old windows ME i have will. I tried the 6 floppy discs for start up, but they never finish.Something always fails to load. maybe i need to start with 6 brand new discs. if i know they will work ill buy them. thanx

  1. Can your computer install windows vista

If not try to get a proffesional to fix it

  2. It will give you the error message that you mentioned: the version of windows you are trying to load is older than the version currently being used. However you should still get an option that should allow you to go ahead & install the older files. Basically thats a format & recover. Floppy Discs my friend are *the most unreliable medium ever*. Now the way I see it you have the following options. Get a Different XP cd( Buy a new one, borrow, steal ;-) ) Or get anew OS, Vista Or Linux.

  3. What are you trying to do?

You cannot repair a newer installation of XP with an older set of disks - you will simply break the newer version.

You can use the old disk to do a complete re-install if you have a valid product key, and then install the updates from the Microsoft website (this will be slow). If you do not have a valid key, the update site will detect this.

  4. Go to the drive in my computer, right click, click format and when it's finished, try the pro disc again.
