I installed a Motorola SM56 speakerphone V.92 56k internal PCI modem. I tried to connect to my ISP (Earthlink) and got an Error Message: No dial tone detected, so I went into Properties>Connections>Call Preferences and changed the wait for dial tone setting. Now I can dial out but my modem just wont connect with my server. I used the Windows phone dialer program to call my cell phone just to make sure it works and it did but when I try to go online I can hear it dial and thats it,none of the strange noises a dial up connection usually makes when trying to make that handshake with the server computer can be heard.

  1. since it was able to dial to a phone so it PROBABLY MIGHT be connecting to the internet.. but the speed is just so slow (56.6 Kbits per second is max which the user never gets that means only 7Kbytes per second. what you get is generally 70% of the max speed... which is less than 5Kbytes per second..) that your browser is not able to display anything for a long time...

I have a 256Kbps(min) - 2Mbps(max)  broadband and trust me the sites these days are "heavy" to keep me waiting for sometime...

take me advice... get a broadband connection... its far easier and faster... and the rental and the LAN card wont cost you a fortune too.!!!
