  1. Check the following:

    1) To check your network car is working go to Run, then type CMD. You are now at a command prompt. Type 'Ping 127.0.0.0' this will attempt to contact your card (loopback) you could also check your 'Network connection' (Right click My computer, Manage, Device Manager) do you see a network adapter attached? check to make sure it isn't disabled or install the correct driver if it's reporting issues.

    2) If the above is ok open up a command prompt again (Run, then type CMD)

type the words 'IPCONFIG/ALL' without quotes. Are you receiving an IP configuration? The important ones are IP address (should look like 192.168.0.1 for example) a subnet and also a gateway would be populated too if all was good.

    3) Check out your network connection (Control panel, network connections) Click on it's properties and choose TCP/IP setting. You should have this set to 'Automatically DHCP'

    4) Carefully review your own settings to that above to see any differences. It may be your router is NOT setup as a DHCP server and that you require to manually insert an IP (Point 3)

If you are totally new to computers then my advise would be to telephone your internet servcie provider. They will take you through each point step by step on the phone. I appreciate it is quite difficult to grasp over Yahoo answers is you are clueless.

    Best of luck

  2. Yeah you need the drivers. Try the wireless lan and route through the router.

  3. Okay, lets try it this way..

When you turn on the computer (I am assuming that she has windowsXP), does she get an icon by the clock (Lower left hand side of the screen) that says local area connection with a red cross over it? If you move your mouse pointer to it, it should say a network cable is unplugged. If it does, does that thing change or do anything when you plug in the internet plug?

If it doesn't go to Start>Control panel>Network & Internet connections>Setup or change internet connection. It'll open up a page go to>LAN settings>Check the box: automatically detect my settings. Restart.. Now with the cable still in, see if you can surf..

If you still can not Go to the phone, call your ISP, they can help you in a step by step fashion...

Way too much troubleshooting to do without being with you even if on a phone.. ;-0

    Well atleast we tried ??

  4. if you still have no joy try "winsockfix"

i have used this myself a few times with success

    good luck

    robl

  5. try contacting your inernet providers,..they will tell you what to do cz you might need are software or somthing??

  6. Tell this to your mom:  When you plug in the internet plug (It's called an ethernet cable) into the laptop, restart the modem or router by unplugging it, wait for 30 secs, then plug it back in and see if it works.

If you're using windows vista, try letting windows automatically fix the problem.
