Why cant my xbox 360 pick up my ip adress?

i entered my ip address manually on my xbox but my xbox couldnt obtain my p address why is this!?!?!?

hey wats up if ur xbox is hooked up to a computer make sure that your setting allow a shared internet accsess if u dont know heres the link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306126  and then let the xbox do the work but if ur connected to a modem then you'll have to set up a new network!!!!!! Wireless im not sure!!!!!!!!
