Question:

Why cant there be a bridge built where the Woolwich Ferry crosses the river?

The roads are already in place, the congestion around the north and south Woolwich areas would be reduced if traffic was allowed to move through, rather than having to queue for hours for the ferry. Why cant they just build a bluddy bridge there now,,, NOW

The proposed Thames Gateway bridge, isnt off the ground, there are still objections to it, its not going to be built in my lifetime, whats the point of that?

  1. Good question, however you are incorrect about the roads already being in place, on the north side of the river a 4 / 6 lane road would need to be built from the west end Victoria Docks and have a very steep rise to the eastern end, effectively as long as the runway.

The amount of excavation needed to support such a structure on what is predominantly silt would be enormous. Then we have the problem of the foundations for the bridge proper an even greater task than those already mentioned and it is most unlikely that there is enough room between the river and the docks to accomodate the support structure.

Double what I have already outlined for the southern route and the problem becomes even more apparent. The scale of demolition involved to accommodate such a structure is beyond any political will to proceed with such a plan.

  2. There is enough bridges to cross, why build another one

  3. Not enough room for a bridge. The necessary height (look at the QE2 bridge) would mean a long approach road either side and there just isn't enough room.

  4. There is a bridge not far down stream it is the Queen Elizabeth Bridge,

why not use that , the other thing is bridges are not cheap and it would have to a suspension bridge and thew re would be tolls to pay for it

  5. Where is the romance in you. a restful time to wind down before a little relaxing cruise, and don't forget he little man selling duty free stuff out of a suitcase, you can't take those memorises away from me.
