  1. Because gelatin is the ingredient that is put to most candies to make them chew =]

  2. I think you mean gelatin, which comes from horses hoofs.  It is the reason why they are chewy so taking it out would make it a different kind of candy.  Hey, Devil Child, chewing gum is vegan and does not contain gluten, which is vegan by the way, it comes from wheat berries.

  3. because of the eggs

  4. because the 'gluten' makes them chewy

    just like glycerine

thats why they put it in also in chewing gum,

explains why some chewing gum isnt vegetarian/vegan

  5. Because there's no gluten in skittles...

Gluten is wheat protein.  It provides structure and chewiness to bread dough and, when separated from the starchy components of wheat flour, can be used to make a meaty textured food called seitan.  Vegetarians and vegans can and most often do eat gluten because it's not an animal product.

What you're thinking of is gelatin, which is very, very different.  Gelatin is a slaughter byproduct made by boiling bones, hides and connective tissue of slaughtered animals.  It acts as a thickener.

"They" probably could take gelatin out of skittles if they had any motivation whatsoever to do so.  But they'd have to come up with a formulation using a plant-based thickener that gave them the desired outcome.  Since the majority of people eat the primary product of slaughter (meat) they don't much care about also eating its byproducts.  The folks at Skittles aren't interested in investing money in reformulating just to capture the vegetarian market, slim as it is.

  6. It is a binding agent which makes them chewy.

  7. I saw a programme the other day  which said that skittles had absolutely no food value at all - in fact they contain something that is banned in the USA !!  I'd give them up if I were you, lol

  8. I think you're talking about gelatin. Gluten is very different, and it's vegan. Gelatin is not vegan, or even vegetarian. Skittles contain gelatin because it makes them chewy. There are alternatives to gelatin (like the stuff they use in Swedish Fish and Sour Patch), but they are probably more expensive for Mars (the company that makes Skittles), so they don't have any incentive to switch. Even if they did take out the gelatin, if you are vegetarian/vegan for animal rights reasons, you still shouldn't eat them, because Mars tests on animals.
