  1. Because you didn't make the decision to sacrifice yourself to move the runner.  You were trying to get a hit and the fielder made a play and choice on who to get out.

If there was any play in baseball that should be a sacrifice thats not is when there is a runner on 2nd or 3rd and the batter grounds out to the Right Side of the Infield in order to advance the runner.

  2. First of all, simply because you're safe doesn't mean you can't be credited with a sacrifice, nba_gsw. You've answered a lot of baseball questions and gotten very few right. Go back to basketball.

It's a fielder's choice. It would have been a sacrifice, if it was obvious the batter was trying to give himself up to advance the runners. As described, it was simply a grounder that resulted in a force out.

  3. A sacrifice is when the batter gets out. It this case it should be scored a fielder's choice.

  4. DESTINY

  5. the whole meaning of sacrifice is givin ur self up and if you reach base safley then you are not givin ur self up

  6. Because the fielder decided to throw you out, and not the runner, therefore a fielder's choice.

EDIT: Woops, I had it the other way around.  NBA_GSW nailed it.

  7. because he's safe so basically it's and infeild single !

  8. It would be helpful if you wrote more clearly. What the heck does "... [T]he guy hits a grounder so they throw it to second but dont get him at first" mean?

A sacrifice requires the batter to give himself up: he's sacrificing himself so his teammate can advance (on a bunt) or score (on a sacrifice fly). If you're trying to get a hit, you're not sacrificing yourself.

  9. because you didn't move the runners or runner you just replaced him with you.

  10. Heres the big reason:

Its not a sacrifice, cuz you(the batter) is safe at first.  SImple as that.

The runner who was at first going to second got sacrificed on the play.

  11. It can't be a sacrifice because the batter reached first safely throwing out the lead runner in the process. A sacrifice can only be a sacrifice if the batter gets out and the runner either advances a base safely or scores a run.

  12. It's not a sacrifice, it's a fielder's choice. They had the choice to get him out at first, but they threw it to second. He's on first, but he doesn't get credit for the hit.

  13. because it cant....?...sorry...no idea.

  14. it was a fielders choice.

  15. Because of Black Jesus.

  16. Sacrifices only happen under two circumstances.  Either a fly that scores a runner or on a bunt.  Not every bunt, though.  It has to be very clear that the intent of the batter is to give himself up so that the runners can advance.  If he hides his attempt to bunt until the last moment, the scorer deems that he was trying to get a hit and then rules no sacrifice no matter the turn out.

In short, it is not the result of the at bat that makles it into a sacrifice, it is the intent successfully completed.
