Why cant we buy and download windows mobile 6 for pda with an older version ?

There are no drivers for it.

Unlike a standard operating system on a pc where additional drivers can be stored on the operating system a pda is operating with a limited amount of space.

So only driver software for the particular pda is installed.

So microsoft would have to sell it specifically for each one .

Also a lot of them have slower processors and less memory which will not handle the newer operating systems.

It is  licensed to the specific manufacturers for it so they ould be the ones who decide if they want to make an upgrade for it or not.

The big reason is they want you to have incentive to purchase a new PDA every so many years.

If they offered upgrades for every unit you would not want to replace it since it would still meet your needs.

It would be nice if capitalism would embrace more sustainable profit models (such as selling you upgrade chips or something) but that is what is right now.
