  1. in theory, we could, but its a bit like the story of adam & eve. once we've tasted the apple we cant really go back.

  2. because a simple life would mean no technology, less safety, and no medicines.

plus, you would need EVERYONE to decide to go back. if only you went back to a cave or a hut, what if you were robbed by a burglar with a gun? you wouldnt own a gun.

people are stubborn. thats exactly why.

  3. because the people in power dont want to give it up and the have the power to control power

  4. because you wouldn't be able to use yahoo answers :)

  5. I agree with doing without materialism...

but whats the point of judging unnecessary technology and having it taken away? Just choose not to use it and that's that...

Creation/invention/the mind has given birth to many atrocities, just as we have given birth to grand and life saving technologies....

Sometimes, the stupidest concepts have given birth to life altering inventions.....

And I'm sure our future children will be saying the same thing as you ;-) our chaotic lives will probably seem equivalently simple to them, as the past to us

  6. You can, if you want to.

  7. We can go back to a simple life. In spite of several compelling circumstances, several people even now lead a simple life. They do not  have much complications.

But when the world around is technologically improving very fast, the people who wish to lead a simple life are also dragged and forced to change their life style. If we think deep, we are becoming slaves day by day and we are becoming lazy because of the scientific and technological inventions.

  8. Because we are too enamored with life.

  9. I lived in a camping trailer for 15 years. No heat, no running water...

    You know what?

    It sucked!

Spend an hour every morning heating water on a camper stove so you can take a bath.

Cook only enough to eat at one sitting because you have no refrigerator.

Wake up one morning with ice in your hair.

Then tell me we need less technology.

  10. Because were living in a world where people are not contended. People always strive more and more, thus making life complicated. I even thought  of how complicated the modern life is. But people are always depending to the so called "RIGHT" answer. People are afraid that they might be left out.

Today, this world is really complicated, there are set of standards for the society. An example would be going to college. Today, people seem to treat college as a god. The so called "only way to success", thus creating    a narrow example to success(Ex.successful financially). What if there are people who are contended with farm life, to they have the choice, or the society is demanding them to go to college to achieve the so called "success". Anyway life is complicated and people are often locked up to majority of the ideas. People seem to strive more and more. And forgetting the real purpose of life, and that is to love, share.Anyway as much as we want to go back, people today are demanding us to stick to their options.

    Hoped that answer your question.

  11. Good idea except perhaps the bedroom games!

  12. You ask this question on this forum? Thanks but no thanks, give me a technology filled and cutting-edge life any day. The simple life was so darn boring! And grossly overrated...

  13. The main reason is that it is somewhat brutish and very uncomfortable.  Few people not raised in those standards would desire such a life.  Materialism is simply the honest recognition that most religion and metaphysics are nonsense or empty metaphors that don't relate to anything in reality.

Sure, some technology is not necessary, for example my brother completely avoid gadgets like computers, iPods, but even he has a cell phone, although he usually has it turned off so that only he can communicate with it.  He is happy with his life but he also cannot cope with complexity.

  14. It would be nice, but times change and so do people. I remember when you could leave your house and leave all the doors unlocked, can't do it anymore. You could take a nice walk in the evening, not anymore. I'm with you.

  15. Unnecessary technology? You mean like the medical advances that made it possible for my children and I to survive their births?

Or the medicine and technology that makes it possible for seizures to be controlled? My daughter and I have both been saved many times from potentially deadly seizures, thanks to the technology of an ambulance and the modern medicine of Diastat.

I lived on a commune when I was a kid where we had to live in total poverty because it was considered more spiritually responsible. They wanted a simple life.

No TV. Hardly any phones. No cars. No toilets, just outhouses. Several families would live in cabins around a main house where we'd share our meals. So, in the cabins, no electricity or water. We made our shoes from tires and inner tubes. We grew our own food.

As a child, I had to collect kindling and chop firewood before we could cook breakfast on a big woodstove.

So! I have lived a simple life. Some things about it were nice. Some things weren't Do you know how nice it is to be able to bathe when you want to?

If you are SERIOUS about pursuing a simple life, google 'intentional communities', peruse the listings, and visit one. But if you have any medical problems, you can probably forget it. :-)

  16. For one thing, a simple life isn't necessarily an EASY life.  Subsistence farmers lead a simple life, but it's exhausting and backbreaking.  The complications of modern life tend to be offset by its comforts and conveniences.

  17. Their are two things from stopping you . YOU and the Government .

  18. Technology is fine.  But if you want to live a much more primitive

lifestyle,  there are still places in the world,   where you can

    do that.
