  1. You don't handle foodstuffs when handling chemicals, full stop.

  2. Because it is a disgusting habit and users of gum do not take care in disposal of it!

If it's against the rules to eat in laboratories, how do you distinguish between chewing gum and, say sucking a mint?

Easiest way to deal with it is to prohibit any form of eating or chewing - if the rules say no chewing, then it means no chewing. Don't try to argue against the rules with logic, just do as they say.

In any system of rules there is always some situation which falls 'on the line' - there seems no reason for it but it must be enforced to back up the rule system!

  3. you can chew gum into the lab but it is prohibited, because gums are sticky and any chemical (gas form)/ bacteria  or any thing that is in the air can stick to it very easily when you open the mouth which may result into some kind of illness. so better keep your mouth shut while chewing gum which is not possible so don't do it into the lab.

  4. well i think its mostly about prince aboul. I understand where the other guy is coming from for most part. But really it depends in what type of lab your working in, chemical labs are not a place to chew gum, mistakes happen and the school or where ever your talking about is just trying to inscure that you are ok, and covering there own butts so they dont get a law suit. well i hope i helped. :) GL

  5. You can only chew gum in your mouth. A lab doesn't have any teeth or spit in it to do the chewing.

  6. Theoretically, you will not need to open your mouth when chewing chewing gum.  But some people will, or will blow bubbles, or will reach into their pocket for another piece of gum...

These activities all might lead to chemicals entering the chewer's mouth, which is unsafe.
