Why cartilageous rings are present in trachea ?

  1. To keep it open.  They operate the same way the metal wire in a dryer vent hose works.


  2. The trachea unlike the oesophaegus needs to be straight at all times for wind to pass in. The cartilages do not help to keep the airway open, but to maintain efficiency of air intake, so that air passes through a straight passage without any blockages. We will still be able to breathe with these but we it will not be efficient enough.

  3. cartilageous rings provide protection to the trachea so that it could not collapse even in the absence of air.


  4. yeah because to make sure the airway is always open for air movement..unlike esophagus, we dont have to make it open all the time because we only need it during swallowing..actually it is not ring rite?it is C shape cartilage..it is C shape because it will make room for esophagus to expand
