  1. the man wants to say regulation, but remember casinos are owned and operated by the mob.  the river is to get rid of people, if you know what i mean.

  2. actually they are built on a platform over the water ,in some states its is illegal to gamble or open a casino ,so they are built over the water to avoid this law and they dont have to pay a property tax if its in or over the water just leased the property for the water access

  3. not just casinos. if you look at human history, the maximum size of a city is constrained by the amount of water available. before plumbing, you had to be in carrying distance of a water source. after plumbing, water was a source of income and revenue.

if you look today, many of the largest cities in the world are on the coast line. over 50% of the US population is in the 10 states bordering the atlantic and pacific oceans. other large cities that are costal include tokyo, hong kong, london, etc.

so, it's not unusual at all for anything to be built near water. you might as well talk about hotels, or stock exchanges.

and then, it's rather simple to point out all the exceptions. las vegas, for example, is about an hour away from the colorado river.

  4. Just the ones along the Mississippi River by regulation most are on barges although Treasure Bay is a pirate ship.

  5. In a lot of states, that's the regulation. It has to be in the water and a river would be the only water that a lot of casinos could be on. I was a dealer in MS for over 12 years and until right after Hurricane Katrina, all the casinos had to be on water. Now they can be land-based. All of them are still basically by the river because that's where they were already, but the last one I worked at drained the water it was in and built it up so that it was on land and more stabilized.

  6. the casinos in my area are on the ground... but its interesting to know this.. i was reading the answers and they are very interesting... nice to know it...

  7. They do not always build on river banks.  It was a development that occurred because of strange regulations.  A few years ago there was no casino gaming in most state in the US.  At that time a few Indian tribes began operating casinos and a few states became convinced that limited casino gaming would be acceptable.

Instead of licensing casinos in all areas of the states, they decided, because "riverboat gambling" was traditional, they could license a few gambling boats.

Those gambling boats were required to be boats with crews and engines. Very soon developers built "boats" that were nothing more than barges that were indistinguishable from piers on the water.  Nevertheless, they were floating.  The hotels would be built on land adjacent to the river bank.

Finally the states gave up and agreed to allow land-based casino gaming in restricted areas, usually in a "casino gaming corridor" near when casino gaming had already developed, which was on the river banks.

If it had not been for the puritanical resistance to casino gaming, casinos would have been built in more convenient locations.
