  1. Its called Carnivale, and it is on the day of Mardi Gras in the US, the Italians dress up in these beatiful masks and costumes like this

They are beatiful although I never have been to Italy.

But have seen pics and videos

they go down to this one part of italy (I forgot which part sorry) and there are Italians on a wagon type thing and throw oranges at people that are standing there and the people can throw them back!

This is the History of Carnivale:

    Hope this Helps

  2. If you Google 'Venice Carnival history' you get lots of information.  Here's a website to get you started: http://www.venetia.it/s_carn_eng.htm

  3. The Carnival of Venice is merely more famous and peculiar, because of the masks, but throughout Europe, in particular in Italy (Carnevale) and Germany (Fasching), it  is, as Irr ational rightly points out, a very popular celebration, based on a religious festival. It’s roots, however, could even be pre Christian (the ancient Roman Saturnalia and the Greek feasts of Dyonisius and the Germanic-Celtic tradition of “kicking out Winter’s spirits"). People like to celebrate, the time of year is usually linked to their faith or belief. It becomes a tradition and hey presto – you have the Venetian 18th Century Balls and Masks.

  4. It's a Catholic tradition, believe it or not. The day before lent starts, is Martedi Grasso, or Mardi Gras in New Orleans. It literally means "fat tuesday", because it's the day before you start giving up things for lent, like meat and whichever your particular choice is. Italy is not the only country to celebrate Carnival, Brazil is also a country that particularly enjoys it as well.

The Carnival of Venice is a beautiful celebration and a great source of pride for Italians. It's the best in Europe, and Italians make sure it remains so. It's much the same way as the US takes pride in Mardi Gras in New Orleans, without the exessive opulence.

  5. HEY!! I live in Italy but I'm not from here. The whole Carnival celebration isn't limited to Venice. All of Italy celebrates it. Italy is a roman catholic country and carnival is a celebration of the start of lent. most people give up things for lent, don't eat meat on Fridays and it marks the 40 days Jesus spent in the dessert before easter....etc...google lent if your not a roman catholic as my brain may not remember all of the exact facts!

It is a huge party that lasts weeks and it is the BEST!! it's roots go back to Catholicism but the party is 100% modern and a blast!
