In certain certain circumstances when you are using a cell phone it can cause static build up and cause a spark. Withe fuel fumes from the gas or petrol, you can cause an explosion. The possibility is remote, but it can and has happened.

For the same reason the car radio should be off and the engine switched of while refueling.

An explosion in a gas station is not a pretty sight and has killed many.

theres a myth that if it rings it will cause heat and ignite the gas fumes and blow you up

Because when they 'ring' they give off an electrical spark that can cause a gas explosion.  Cell phones can be used as detonators.

Supposedly the static electricity could ignite the gas.

However, Mythbusters proved this is a myth.

The only reason that it is not recommended is that if you should drop your phone and the battery comes out and strikes the ground it could cause the flumes to ignite but this has never happened...

Some moron convinced a law-maker that the signal sent from a cell phone could ignite gasoline vapors. Yeah, right.
