  1. Deng Xiaoping said, "Poverty is not socialism. To be rich is glorious. "

And with that, China began its reform to a market based society with a Communist Government.

  2. Because communism has never worked, and the new leadership in China were no longer beholden to it.

  3. The main reason for it is probably change in China's political leadership.

Mao Zedong died and so did many of his colleagues.  And the new leaders had different ideas about how to run the country well.

  4. Deng Xiaoping decided to use market methods/capitalism because China's economy was not great/doing well at the time.  It was the 1970s or 1980s and Mao died shortly before he took power.  The Cultural Revolution (which targeted many middle class and rich persons and devastated the economy) led to many problems and China's economy was in a bad shape (Communist methods had not achieved economic growth nor helped the economy of the country).  So, Deng Xiaoping decided to use market methods/capitalism to fix the economy and strengthen it.  He succeeded and the economy of China is strong today (albeit with problems too but its growing).
