Why complain about our government and/or big business if you chose not to participate?

Lots of people complain that they are being railroaded by the system. However view people participate in townhall meetings. If they do so, it is only because it directly affects them. How many people write to their elected officials or attend public meetings? There are people who do, but to have a voice there needs to be more.
