Why computer suddenly stopped playing AVI?

For some reason my Windows Media Player suddenly stopped playing video files that are AVI format. I also have the same problem with my Windows Movie Maker 2.6. I am running my pc with Windows Vista Home Premium. Can anybody please help me with this problem?
