Why construction zones put cones so close together the lanes are not big enough for larger vehicle's?

Why construction zones put cones so close together the lanes are not big enough for larger vehicle's?

They do this for your protection so that you stay away from the road work and the road workers............

I believe the minimum lane width is 11 feet on interstates during construction. Remember, they only have so much space to work with.

i've never seen a large vehicle, including 18 wheelers, hit a cone or anything, they're wide enough
