it is done bcoz

remaning ferrous sulphide oxidizes

2FeS + 3O2 ------------ 2FeO + 2SiO2

sillica(SiO2) combines with this FeO left in the Matte to form FeSiO3(ferrous slag)

FeO + SiO2 ------------ FeSiO3

Copper matte contains small amount of FeO as impurity which is removed as FeSiO3 slage when reacts with silica.

    FeO  +  SiO2   ----->   FeSiO3  (slage)
