It's just like Chinese people are thinking that they are very cunning in swallowing Tibet and other adjoining territories with their expansionary and capitalistic marketing techniques. Whatever they are doing in Tibet in terms of economical upgrading, most of it is for their own benefit like what any other colonising nation has done in the past. It's not time for India to sit back and relax otherwise they could lose out like the Pandavs did to Kauravs in the Chaupat game. India needs to build much stronger relations with its border states of Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim etc. It would be nice if Pakistan would shelf the idea of fighting over Kashmir and address its own economical issues to create an enviable nation. After all majority of Muslims in India are leading a much better life than in Pakistan and the status of some of the best players in the field of games, business as well as in the Bollywood industry can attest to that. Why they are not in Pakistan is only because their policies of promoting entertainment and cultural identity are not the same as they are in India.

Therefore cunningness may not always have the results that the originator may have anticipated. Just like China is slowly moving away from its fundamental policy of communism the way it was originally enshrined - it's only a matter of time that it will also fall like the Giant Soviet Union.

Maybe because most people feel intimidated by a cunning, slithery person and aren't very sure what to expect from them.

They feel as though they have to watch their own backs.

Because others allow them to. If you don't care to be manipulated by such types, if you are strong and hold your own, NOTHING can shake you, cunning people can simply make no inroads into your life at all.

"Being cunned" (is there such a word? :-p) trigger our most intense emotion so that our brain will remember the incident to prevent being hurt by the same person, same trick or same situation again.  It is an important social learning.  It hurts really badly and hard to forget, people get flashbacks and the feeling lingers much longer and more intense than it logically should.
