  1. We use a card which you can use in virtually all stores (PIN) which is in effect a debit card yes as it draws from your bank account

    It's more practical than cheques of course, and is promoted by many retailers - e.g. at Albert Heijn, Makro, Ikea etc (they have checkouts specifically for Pin transactions as they go quicker than with cash).  It's secure and easy which I guess are the reasons why it is so popular

    Credit cards just aren't as commonly used here as other countries I have been to
