He didn't.  Its based on the combined work of Fourier in 1824, Tyndall in 1859, and Arrhenius in 1896.  Gore has publicized it, that's all.

Just like inventing the internet, Gore did not "make up" global warming. He latched onto a cause that he felt could propell him into the forefront of the news. He was just a well know face that was used to ptomote an adgenda of the eco-left wing nuts.
