Why did Ben Franklin state this quote???

"Those that would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserves neither liberty nor safety."

Why did Ben not say it like this...

..."Those that would give up essential safety to purchase a little temporary freedom deserves neither safety or liberty."

  1. If he said it the way you wrote it, it would mean something different. Benjamin Franklin meant that liberties are more important than temporary safety and in the end it is our liberties that protect us.

  4. Liberty and safety are two extremely different states and to surrender the smallest amount of liberty for  a momentary safety is a foolhardy trade. You can often find temporary safety but it is much more difficult to regain lost liberty, just ask any person serving time in prison. Ben is saying you must realize liberty's great intrinsic value and defend your liberty and never compromise it even if it means being in an insecure situation or you do not deserve to be free.
