Why didn't he inspire / capture enough Dem votes?

  1. He's too intellectual.


  2. Because the Democrats had too many excellent candidates vying for the nomination. The Republicans had none.  

  3. Too arrogant to be well liked.

  4. He missed his best chance in the 1984, when a spin doctor (strategist) Pat Cadell failed to persuade him to contest the primaries. Pat Cadell found work with the campaign of a no hoper and turned that no hope candidate (Gary Hart) into a contender. But Pat rued the missed chance: "I had the keys of the Kingdom and gave them to a false Christ"
