Question:

Why did Blue-Ray win?

Objectively speaking, the Blue-Ray vs HDDVD was VHS vs Betamax all over again.

HDDVD did not have as much storage, but still had storage enough for a full feature HD movie.

HDDVD was cheaper.

HDDVD used better software.

HDDVD had the backing of major manufacturers and Studios.

What went wrong?

  1. The Blu-Ray consortium bribed studios to be exclusively Blu to the tune of half a million dollars each. Toshiba, even though they had the better product could not come up with that kind of money. End of story.

Yes it is sad since HD-DVD was so much more advanced compared to BD. Once again the consumer gets screwed.

  2. Sony paid off the major movie companies to support Blu-Ray .

The world revolves around money and not which product is better .

Sony knew that HD-DVD was breathing down it's neck and enventually people would go for the cheaper priced HD-DVD .

  3. Walmart, PS3 and porno industry !!!

  4. i think it is because you can store a lot more information on a blu ray than an HD DVD, i have seen both a blu ray and a HD DVD, i can hardly tell the difference, i dont think sony was the reason Blu Ray took off, after all they were the company that came out with the Betamax VCR, that never took off, JVC came out with the VHS,

  5. A LOT more information can be stored on a Blu-Ray disc than a HD disc.

And Blu-Ray can not be pirated where-as HD can be.

A Blu-Ray disc CANNOT be pirated. That is exactly why Sony used them for the PS3 games.

  6. MONEY!

It is reported that sony paid half a BILLION dollars to Warner Bros to become bd only and that is the nail in the coffin that sealed the deal.

  7. Not enough companies were sure of the distribution and cash support of the manufacturer and didn't want to pledge advance money.

Just a guess. We will never really know the true reason why the better technology did not win.

  8. all i can say is check out Metal Gear Solid 4 for the PS3. then you will see why Blue Ray DOMINTATED LOL. i feel sorry for the folks who went out and got those HDDVD players. cheaper than a VCR?? d**n i didnt even think they sold those anymore! so i guess that is pretty bad! LMAO!

  9. Uh Sony Hello

  10. Blu-Ray was more well known.

Blu-Ray had more well known supporters, and towards the end, Blu-Ray had almost everyone supporting exclusively them, and when Wal-Mart decided to go Blu-Ray only, that was a MAJOR deciding factor, because Wal-Mart is the largest retailer in the US.

  11. the guy that said blueray cannot be pirated is wrong, anydvd hd can and has been able to for awhile now, sony spent big bucks and toshibas hd players were junk and they went to back the p**n industry and thats when disney puled out and it was all downhill from there

  12. Blue Ray and HDDVD were competing for studio acceptance. When Disney and Universal went to Blue Ray, Sony jumped in and made major bids top the other studios. Sony owns 1/2 of hollywood and millions were on the line. Since Sony had already marketed their Blue Ray player, it was a matter of time before the other major studios would jump aboard. Disney signed major deals under a blue ray format and when Blockbuster and Netflix video announced they were dropping all future orders for HDDVD, it was over.

  13. I don't think this is over yet, there are still millions of people yet to choose.

I'm still on regular DVDs for now.

  14. Simple really - Blu-Ray discs are cheaper to make.  This meant that production costs for the film studios were kept down and sales margins (i.e. profit per disc) could be kept higher.

As always, the consumer loses out to big business...

  15. HDDVD needed to win the format because now profile 1.1 and now 2.0 this was already in the HDDVD already when released. Blu ray was expensive and people are dum because now everyone has to upgrade there blu ray player to profile 2.0 and spend more money when the HDDVD already had it and pay more for blu ray disc and blu ray player when HDDVD gave the same identical picture and anyone says differ well it is all in there minds because if you get a good LCD TV and an HDA35 you where set. I have an a35 and a sony 52inLCD and it looks so perfect. People new sony more than toshiba major corporations went with sony and the ps3 was released why don't you think sony don't have that many games out? why do you think they have differ ps3 out. The Ps3 was released because of the blu ray player that is what they where leaning towards not the games that is why they have so little and even the ps3 is updated firmware they still can't get the sound decoding right for the home theater.
