  1. mumbai stands for the goddess mumba.mumba is the goddess of local koli fishermen who were the original habitants of mumbai 7 islands.till 1995 or 1996 it was known a bombay as named by the brits.but due to political motives it was changed to mumbai.

  2. It was first called Mumbai, then the British came and changed it to Bombay. After the Brits left, the Indians wanted the original name back, hence it is now called Mumbai again.

  3. The former name Bombay had its origins in the 16th century when the Portuguese arrived in the area and called it by various names, which finally took the written form Bombaim, still common in current Portuguese use. After the British gained possession in the 17th century, it was anglicised to Bombay, although it was known as Mumbai or Mambai to Marathi and Gujarati-speakers, and as Bambai in Hindi, Urdu.[7] [8] The name was officially changed to its Marathi pronunciation of Mumbai in 1995.

"Mumbai" written in Marathi at the Taj Mahal Palace & TowerA widespread explanation of the origin of the traditional English name Bombay holds that it was derived from a Portuguese name meaning good bay.[9] This is based on the fact that bom (masc.) is Portuguese for good whereas the English word bay is similar to the Portuguese baía (fem., bahia in old spelling). The normal Portuguese rendering of good bay would have been boa bahia rather than the grammatically incorrect bom bahia. However, it is possible to find the form baim (masc.) for little bay in sixteenth-century Portuguese.

  4. The  renaming of some of the Indian cities is a result of a movement to change the names of Indian cities from those used during the British imperial period, back to regional or Indian names. 2 reasons cited behind renamings were to remove an imperial name, or to change pronunciation and spelling to fit local custom.

The renaming of Bombay to Mumbai was carried out in response to the demands of the Hindu Nationalist Shiv Sena party. 'Mumbai' has long been the name of the city in Marathi and Gujarati, whilst Hindi-speakers called it Bambai. However, some argue that as the renaming was part of the Shiv Sena's Bhumiputra (son of the soil) policy, it is an attempt to erase evidence of the city's cosmopolitanism and multi-lingual character.
