  1. His grandfather was James the 2nd of Britain. He was deposed by the Parliament of England as he was a Catholic, and William of Orange was crowned in his place.

Charles's father, James was called the old pretender, and attempted an uprising in 1715.

Charles led the Scottish uprising of 1745 to assert his claim on the throne of Great Britain over that of George of Hanover.

  2. Charles Edward Stuart "Bonnie Prince Charlie" is actually the rightful heir to the English throne. He was the son of James Francis Edward Stuart, who in turn was also the only son of James II and VII. King James was the last "Catholic" monarch to have ruled England, Scotland and Ireland. Many of his subjects distrusted his religious policies and autocratic tendencies, leading a group of them to depose him in the Glorious Revolution in 1688.

He was replaced not by his Roman Catholic son, James Francis Edward ( but by his Protestant daughter and son-in-law, Mary II and William III, who became joint rulers in 1689. James made one serious attempt to recover his crowns, when he landed in Ireland in 1689. After his defeat at the Battle of the Boyne in the summer of 1690, James returned to France, living out the rest of his life under the protection of his cousin and ally, King Louis XIV.

Bonnie Prince Charlie, was living in exile only because he was a Catholic, and the Parliament only wanted Protestant monarchs sit on the throne. Therefore, his grandfather King James II, his father James Francis Edward Stuart (known to many as James III) were forced to leave England and never to return.

Generally, speaking, the English crown should have went to him, he is technically, the rightful heir to the English throne, it was only because of his Catholic faith, that banned him from the line of succession, which eventually went into the hands of the Germans. The Stuart line did not die out, and there are many descednats living today, scattered around the world who all have a better claim to the current British throne.

  3. He was the grandson of king james II of england.  James II, who was a Catholic, was deposed and went into exile.  James II had a son by his  second wife, also called James (the Old Pretender).  Doubt had been cast on his parentage, it was suggested that he hd been smuggled into the birthing chamber and wasn't really the son of James II at all). James's daughter Mary became Queen, and ruled jointly with her husband William, who was her cousin, the son of james II's sister.  After the deaths of William and Mary, the throne went to mary's younger sister Anne.

It seems that Anne at one time contemplated making her younger half-brother James her heir, but in the end her crown went to her distant cousin George of Hanover, who was a great-grandson of King James I.  James (the 'Old pretender') raised a rebellion against George I, in 1715, which was a failure.  His son Charles (Bonnie prince Charlie 'the Young pretender') tried again in 1745.  He failed too.

George I, who succeeded to the throne after the death of Queen Anne, had just as much Stuart blood in him as his Stuart cousins, but it was on his mother's side rather than his father's.  His claim to the throne is as good as anyone else's , his grandmother was the older sister of King charles I, and he had as much royal blood as anyone else.

Moreover, the throne of England has often changed hands for reasons other than primogeniture, kings have frequently deposed each other.  personally, I don't think the Normans had any right to take the throne of England from the Saxons, but it is no use hoping for the Saxon rightful heir to pop up now.
