Why did Carl Levin along with Kerry and others write this letter to Pres. Clinton?

Sen. John Kerry on Saddam, Iraq, WMDs:

"[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs."

  1. Clinton took the requested necessary actions and Iraq's ability to harm others, whatever it might have been at the time, was contained.

    It is also important to note that Iran's belief that Iraq had WMDs helped to keep that country relatively quiet.

    The UN inspectors, who were in Iraq in 2003, were forced to leave because Bush was about to invade.  As we know, the inspectors were not finding any WMDs.  They weren't allowed to finish their inspections.  No WMDs were subsequently found in later inspections.  


  2. It was also before the UN weapons inspectors found out that there was no longer an active WMD program or stockpiles in Iraq. Back then, everyone thought that Saddam had them and/or was making them. Before we invaded in 2003, we found out that this wasn't the case.
