  1. Barnados started as a 'ragged' school for boys in the 1867. It was common for educational institutions to be segregated so there would have been nothing unusual in this. From this he found that many of the boys were destitute and went on to found the first orphanage for boys 3 years later. This was followed by another for girls in Barkingside where the organisation is still based although no longer needing to run orphanages.

    Many children have reason to be grateful to Barnados for giving them the start they would not otherwise have had.
