Why did Europeans not want to settle on New Guinea? Why did they settle on Australia? ?

  1. The climate of New Guinea is more tropical and the terrain is more jungle with less opportunity to grow crops or raise live stock . . .It is also very different than the English country side.  Australia has more open space and the type of terrain for sheep and cattle raising much like England with the lower two thirds of the country very hospitable to agriculture.
