Why did Gandhi start protesting against the British???

There is no short answer to this question.

India was a British colony.  Gandhi wanted India to be a free and independent nation, and he wanted the British to leave.  That is about as short an answer as you will get.

basically England controlled India at the time adn taxed them.  they wanted freedom and independence...think Revolutionary War but Gandi as Washington.
