  1. East Germany could not surive on it's own after it was cutoff from the Soviet Union.  Many Germans, East and West, wanted reunification, for nationalistic sake.  West Germany did it for that reason and humanitarian reasons.


  2. Imagine if your country, that has been like that for centuries, is all of the sudden cut in half and your whole family or friends end up in what a rogue government now calls another country. This is what happened in Germany.

Freedom and democracy is a powerful thing... as is Capitalism.  Like mentioned, East Germany was in stark poverty while over the border it was flourishing... just like North Korea and SOuth Korea.  I think you can search of a satellite photo in Yahoo images... just hit "north Korea at night"  wooooo.  East Germany was the same dead and old.
