Why did God have to create smart people?

Well, to be honest when you stop and look around you will find some folks who don't seem to make it much past these first two things you mention on our collective journey to higher understanding. I say that to be a little humorous but really there might be a tiny bit of truth in it after all. I do not say this to be mean or make fun of someone, but what makes them so different from those who spend their entire lives searching and grasping onto anything and everything they can find to help them understand all that they can before they leave this lifetime? Desire!

What motivates one more than another. Why do some people seem quite content to reach the point in life when they have finally come to the end of their to do list. Born, grew up, schooled, married, reproduced, succeeded, retired, waiting to die. But there are others, some where along the way that begin to see their checklist quickly approaching the finish line, when they suddenly realize that there has got to be more than that.

Something inside of them begins to sense or feel that they are missing something more and have been perhaps their entire lives. These people feel the need to learn as much as they can or experience everything imaginable, because there is a desire deep within that motivates them to the next level. What ever that next thing is for them that brings a sense of satisfaction is where they are headed. And by this desire they have, they continue on over and over again reaching the next place they want to be.

There are some people who don't feel this desire as strongly as others for sure, but it is not that they don't have it, for we all are full of desire for satisfaction. But some are more aware of it and it is felt at much greater heights. Desire is what motivates us to do everything we do, our need or longing to find this satisfaction. I say all this in explanation to your question as I have come to see it in myself.

The only problem with this desire, is whether you are one who feels it more at the level you first mentioned, basic needs more or less, or one who feels it at an excelerated degree, we never feel the satisfaction we are searching after for very long once we receive it. This is the reason why as you say we couldn't continue to run around like mindless people. We were simply not created this way!
