  1. My brother was approaching the age of being able to be conscripted.. .I was a lot younger... but I know that he and his friends .. not to mention the parents of all were relieved..

    we lived across the street from a family who had lost a son ( who had been conscripted in the Vietnam War... so it was a real fear to all in our town

    Whitlam ended conscription because it was an unpopular policy with the people of the country and it was an election promise he made.
