Question:

Why did I crave chicken when I first became vegetarian?

It went on for a week. It was totally out of character for me too, as normally I've got little interest in food and only eat when i'm hungry!

I understand it's got to do with the chemicals but could someone explain this in more detail? Thanks!

  1. I think it's because of the chemicals that are in the food that's fed to chickens (also in cows, pigs, etc).  Those chemicals are stored in the muscles (meat) or whatever animal you're eating and you get addicted to them (dairy products are also addictive for this reason).  So, it's not the meat you're craving it's what's in the meat.  It'll pass as those chemicals are cleared from your body.  :)

  2. Your body is craving protein. Meat takes longer to break down when you eat it, whereas when you eat vegetarian meal you get hungry faster.

  3. I have this problem . And the strange thing is I have been a vegetarian for the last 20 years. And everytime I am going to be ill . I crave chicken a couple of days before!!!!!

  4. I don't know but I crave chicken all the time.

I get the Morning Star Farms Chik-n patties, they really taste like chicken and it takes care of any cravings.

  5. I have trouble with eliminating chicken myself right now trying to become a vegetarian you have to try to become creative and eat things that would be in place of chicken its just culture wise we are used to eating animals so much in this country unfortunately but slowly but surly it'll change ........ just your mind and stomach were used to it but you have to change your mindset

  6. Basically, your body is craving something that it is missing. It's possibly protein, so make sure that your vegetarian diet is full of items like beans that contain a high amount of protein. It's also mental, like the "forbidden fruit". I don't particularly care for bananas, but if it was decided I could never have one again, I'd be dying for one!
