Why did I receive DMV registration papers, when I sold the car in April?

I reside in CA, I mailed all the papers on time and the registration for the car I sold expires in July.

What happened and what do I do? Also the registration papers says that it needs a smog check, Do I cover the cost of that or does the buyer?

  1. maybe the buyer didn't put in their name.

  2. Actually, in California, there is a small form to fill out called a "Release of Liability". I found out the hard way after trusting a dealership to handle all paperwork. Six months after the trade-in of the car, I got a parking ticket from San Diego. I hadn't been to San Diego in 25 years. It took a year to clear that up. You can follow up by phone or internet, but give it about 30 days or so after the sale.

  3. if you sold car contact dmv and maker sure that it is being registered in someone elses name or you still could be held liable and by law the seller is responsible for the smog unless you make a written agreement signed stating otherwise like sold as is not in running order for parts etc...

  4. The wheels of government turn slow.Don't worry about it at all. When you sold your car your resposibility for it ended. You don't have to do a thing!

  5. 2 things possible:  Their records simply haven't been updated to show you no longer own the car.... or.... the new owner has never registered the car you sold him and put it in his name and it is still registered to you.  You must call/visit the DMV to see which scenario it is
