Why did Indiana Jones kill that guy?

In Raiders of the Lost Ark. The dude with the swords. He probably trained his whole life to become a master swordsman and then this cocky, lazy foreigner comes along and just shoots him. Jones didn't even use his whip. What a waste of training and time. Sure it made me chuckle, but when I thought about it I felt bad for that sword guy. Indiana Jones is a d**k.

Someone above me touched on Harrison's sickness, so I'll tell the whole story.

It was supposed to be an amazing sword vs. fists and whip fight, but Harrison was actually suffering from severe food poisoning so they never managed to finish the fight. Eventually someone said "Why can't he just shoot him?" and Speilberg immediatly liked the idea.

Also I get the sympathy bid, but people, the swordsman is fictional!! And the actor might have done some hard practice, but he wasn't actually shot. So don't worry about it, and Indy is amazing so the d**k comment doesn't apply at all.

Indiana is kewl.  He killed the guy so that he wouldn't get killed. I think that guy should have thought about who he was going up against and trained accordingly.

Come on! If some guy is coming at with you with swords and is clearly gonna kill you, and you've got a gun...you're gonna use it

Originally, it was supposed to be filmed as a swashbuckling whip vs. sword fight.  On the day, Harrison Ford wasn't feeling well, so they decided to go for a different approach.  Actually, I've always liked that bit - It's unexpected.
